Gwen Cardwell Dean

Gwen Dean “Nana”, 75, of Decatur, Alabama gained her heavenly wings on March 14, 2026. Mrs. Dean was born on April 28, 1950 in Mobile, AL to Joseph O’Neal Cardwell and Billie Jean Cardwell. Mrs. Dean is survived by her husband of 57 years, Allen Dean. Gwen loved her husband so much. He was truly her hero and took great care of her in her final years on earth. She is also survived by two daughters Angie Casciano (Nick) and Robyn Penuelas (Juan), granddaughters Ashtyn and Isabella Casciano, brothers Joe Cardwell (Paula) and Alan Cardwell (Sheila) and numerous nieces and nephews. Other special family friends include Tony Locklear (Velissa) and Susette Hale (Tony). Mrs. Dean is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Billie Cardwell and nieces Anna Catherine Cardwell and Jonna Barrier. Gwen was known as “Nana” to many people. She loved her two granddaughters to the moon and back. Ashtyn and Isabella were the loves of her life. Gwen loved to travel to Rosemary Beach and Disney with her family. She traveled to 49 states with her dear friend Teresa Goode after teaching together for many years. Gwen Dean was a beloved teacher, mentor, and role model who dedicated 37 years to educating and inspiring students at Neel Elementary and Danville Middle School. Gwen was known for her passion for learning, patience, and unwavering support for her students. She left a lasting impact on countless young lives. Funeral services for Mrs. Dean will be March 18th, 2026 at the Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church at 3:00 pm. Visitation will be at the Church at 2:00 pm. Pallbearers will be Juan Penuelas, Josh Cardwell, Caleb Cardwell, Tony Locklear, Tony Hale, and Brad Keenum. Honorary Pallbearers include: Nick Casciano, Mark Dean, Randy Dean, David Dean, and Lyle Cardwell. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery. The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses at Hospice of the Valley and the nurses and staff at Westminster Assisted Living Facility for their support and great care given to the family during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of The Valley of Decatur Alabama.
